Note: Chateau means castle in French. The beauty of the Chateau Hagen contrasts with the simplicity of most colonial houses in the early days of the colony. The Chateau Hagen was named after one of its owners, the energetic John-Charles Nicolas Hagen. He was a businessman who created many companies in New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fidji. The Chateau was purchased by the South Province in 1998. Since then it has been made a place of arts and festivals, with the aim to promote culture and botany of the site.
