Join us now on this tour and discover the most symbolic plants of New Caledonia. Of course we will talk about botanic, but also about the social, cultural, historical and economical importance of some of these plants.

A few figures about the gardens of the Chateau Hagen: 2 hectares of gardenright in the middle of the city. It is 135 different species of plants, 25% of them being endemic.

Melaleuca quinquenervia, coffea arabica, santalum austrocaledonicum, stars of our botanical tour!

Among the stars of the show, discover Melaleuca Quinquenervia (parperbark tea tree, locally called Niaouli) and pride of many New Caledonian people.

Also learn about Coffea canephora and Coffea arabica, central to the policy that Governor Feillet acted from 1894 to 1902. Discover why the unlucky and rigid Governor failed in his enterprise.

Next is the discrete Santalum austrocaledonicum. Well hidden gem, this small tree nearly disappeared from the island after being over exploited. But is now back in many gardens of the city.

Finally, learn about 2 essential trees in the Kanak culture, literally yin and yang of local botany, Araucaria columnaris and Cocos nucifera. The first is endemic to the island while the latter is widespread in the world, but find our why both are generally together in melanesian tribes.

Note: Chateau means castle in French. The beauty of the Chateau Hagen contrasts with the simplicity of most colonial houses in the early days of the colony. The Chateau Hagen was named after one of its owners, the energetic John-Charles Nicolas Hagen. He was a businessman  who created many companies in New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fidji. The Chateau was purchased by the South Province in 1998. Since then it has been made a place of arts and festivals, with the aim to promote culture and botany of the site.
