Noumea’s market is a must do experience for those curious about local life!
There is a general rule: “markets are much more than products”. And Noumea’s market is no exception to the rule. In our tour, you will not just discover the variety of New Caledonian products, but also get to meet the local population and immerse yourself into New Caledonian culture.
Noumea’s market is not huge, but it plays an important role in local life. What makes it truly exceptional (may be unique?) in New Caledonia, is that it is one of the very few places in the capital, where you will meet people from every community! Here, Kanak mix with Polynesian, European or Asian people. The common link between those people: passion for their products, friendliness and willingness to answer your questions even when their english is rusty 🙂
After picking you up at your hotel, your guide will lead you to Port Moselle. A stop on a close viewpoint will show you the Port Moselle bay and its market.
Noumea’s market is located on the waterfront of Port Moselle in attractive modern round blue roofed buildings.
2 buildings are devoted to fruit & vegetables, another one to seafood and one hosts the very popular: “La buvette du marché”, famous for its croque monsieur (toasted ham and cheese sandwich) and coffees. The most recent building (built in 2019) hosts local handicrafts. Always good to browse to find some local work! Black pearls, sarongs, clips, fridge magnets, carved wooden souvenirs, to make small gifts when coming back home.
Your guide will make you discover and taste many of the local products that make the pride of New Caledonians: Discover the stories of yam and taro that are so essential to the melanesian culture! Include a stop at the French Crepe lady and enjoy a delicious crepe as well as her sense of humor.
The stroll in the market will lead you to the many colors of the fish market at the image of the parrot fish.
Finally, we will stop at “La buvette du marché” for a coffee or tea. Just sit down, relax and immerse yourself into the local population.
Noumea’s market needs to be on your shortlist of activities to do in Nouméa.
