150 years of history pedestrian historical tour
In our historical tour, you will discover and enjoy Coconut square. Coconut square is at the heart of the city of Noumea and it is one of the few places where native (kanak) people enjoy relaxing and meeting.
You might first be surprised, that coconut square is actually poorly named. In mathematical terms, it is definitely not a square, but 4 squares. Also noticeable is that it has much fewer coconut trees than its name seems to imply.
After this first surprise (we will explain why 😉 ), the tour will slowly bring you to some essential monuments of the late 19th century. You will understand how New Caledonia’s political, military, religious and economical history have shaped the country to make it so unique.
In 3 hours, you will get an overview of 150 years of history, where blood and sweat have established Noumea as the capital city of New Caledonia.
This is a great tour, in which you will learn about the recent history of New Caledonia and understand how unique it is: a mix of French colonization, of native kanak culture and of various waves of immigration.
